Dear Dani,

While the article is meant to be as a thought experiment let's explore the concept a bit further:

Users are familiar with a particular interface, not the OS per se. As more and more applications are going to be web based the future corporate appliance will be some kind o secure environment with a very fast web browser. My feeling is that it will not be a windows machine unless microsoft really changes the pricing and security model of the product.

They way you are putting the problem I think that windows will still be the dominant HOME operating system but the future corporation will be quick to switch as soon as the business applications will support that.

Given the trend in virtualization it might just be that we will stop running one operating system, maybe applications will come with a pre-packaged OS or at least a hardware abstraction layer and will run concurrently on the same platform, irrespective of the actual platform.

I am still forming the image in this area nut refer to my previous article (the future is cloudy and open) for a few more thought.

Thank you for your comment.

I am not a MS fan, but we all have to admit that in a large corporation, 99% of the desktop machines are running Windows. Most of the employees are not IT/SW engineers and they are not familiar with Unix, so I think MS still has a lot of power starting from there.

Nice post. Just one point of clarification : \I will choose Xen, an ex-free solution now embraced by Citrix (becoming free again)\ - Xen has always been \free\. It lived on, post-Citrix' acquisition of XenSource through the Xen.org guys (to which Citrix continued to contribute). XenServer, the Citrix product, is free today - as in no cost. The cost is incurred when the option packs and support (known as Essentials) are purchased.
