Responded to comment on the internet regarding the Transfagarasan:
Transfagarasan was built by army corps of engineers, not exactly forced labour. Civil employees were paid exceptionally well – about 2-3x of an average salary at the time.
It was meant to be as a strategic military access route, in case the USSR decides to invade Romania from the north-east.
The numbers show that 40 people have perished during the construction phase, which is unfortunate. Note that this includes not only the road but also the water management structures and tunnels.
There were 3000 military mobilized. The construction took 4 years – this means about 285 deaths/100.000 workers per year. By today’s standards it’s horrific, but at the time, for a construction project on accelerated schedule, cutting a road trough a mountain with dynamite, it wasn’t that bad.
To put things into perspective – the World trade Center complex was built during the same period in about 5 years and had about 3500 people mobilized and had 60 deaths registered. This means an average of 342 deaths per 100.000 workers per year – and this was in the middle of NY.
